About the Artist

Jewel Baldwin is a watercolorist, specializing in crisp realistic paintings. Being basically self-taught, she began showing her work in 1980, and was accepted in the first juried exhibition that she entered.

Her subject matter is quite eclectic, since she considers most everything a potential painting. Her paintings are rendered completely freehand without projection or other mechanical assistance. She enjoys doing still life paintings, but you will frequently find a life figure in most of her work.

Her works display emotion and deep rich colors, while always focusing on the source of light. She primarily paints from photographs and candid shots of people in everyday life and those she sees in her travels. She feels she developed her true style when she gave up trying to follow all the so-called rules and just painted from the heart.

Jewel’s paintings display a great deal of texture, since she applies several layers of paint. She wants the viewer to feel the roughness of the brick, the softness of the rose petal, to smell the rose, and to get their feet wet when they step into her water scenes.

Jewel’s work has been accepted in numerous juried exhibitions and won numerous awards, including several Best in Show, First Place and Purchase awards. Her work can be found in a number of private and corporate collections.
Jewel is a member of the Charlotte Art League, the Guild of Charlotte Artists, the Charlotte Artists Society, Matthews Artist Guild, and has Signature Membership status in the Watercolor Society of North Carolina and the Southern Watercolor Society.
